HealthyCar.org Mobile Web Site

The Challenge

The Ecology Center’s HealthyCar.org project wanted a mobile web site for users to access product ratings while “on the go.” This site was to complement their existing SMS capability by providing a richer user experience on handheld devices that support HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. This would not be a clone of the desktop web site, but would be optimized for mobile devices and their smaller display size, limited bandwidth, and unique model for user interaction.

The Solution

Mouko compiled a list mobile devices capable of supporting HTML, CSS, and JavaScript to use in testing and quality control. This list included Apple’s iPhone®, the Blackberry®, and a handful of other devices.

Users browse by vehicle make, class, or by ratings of least or most concern. The user selects from lists through a three-level hierarchy of pages, and with each selection drills down toward a single vehicle. Each vehicle’s details page has a brief description of the car, a thumbnail image, fuel economy, chemical levels, and (most importantly) the overall rating. Individual components and complete chemical results, while available on the desktop site, are not displayed in the mobile version due to size and bandwidth constraints. Development took approximately two weeks from design through deployment.

The Result

Using the mobile version of the HealthyCar.org web site, visitors are able to access summary information for all car models tested by the HealthyCar.org team, including overall product ratings and fuel economy while at the dealership, used car lot, or anywhere “on the go.”

Statistics from the site and feedback from users indicate that mobile HealthyCar.org is one of the more popular features of the new HealthyCar.org web site. Please visit and bookmark the site if you’re shopping for a new or used car!
