What We Do / Case Study

Washtenaw Community College

The Challenge

Washtenaw Community College’s student-run newspaper, The Student Voice, needed a cost-effective, efficient way to turn its physical newspaper product into a digital version for the web. The Voice staff were well-equipped as journalists and very proficient with layout tools such as QuarkXPress. They had won numerous awards for their writing, but the web was a new medium for them, and they had little expertise in this area.

The Solution

Software developers at Mouko created a custom solution allowing the Voice staff to provide Mouko with QuarkXPress documents which we, in turn, converted into web pages. This process allowed the journalists to write their articles in a medium in which they felt comfortable, without the need to hire additional, non-writing staff.

The Result

The Student Voice began winning awards for the quality of its web site, in addition to the quality of its writing. With a turn-around time of under three hours, people were reading the web version of the news before the paper had even hit the press.
